Vedanta Names Arun Misra CEO as First-Quarter Profit Surges
Vedanta Appoints Arun Misra as CEO as Q1 Profit Jumps 72% on Strong Metal Prices
Indian metals and mining conglomerate Vedanta has appointed Arun Misra as chief executive officer for a one-year term starting August 1, 2026, as the company reported a sharp increase in first-quarter profit driven by stronger metal prices.
Misra, who currently heads Vedanta subsidiary Hindustan Zinc, will take over as CEO as the group benefits from favourable market conditions across its metals portfolio.
Vedanta reported consolidated net profit of 54.73 billion Indian rupees ($572.4 million) for the quarter ended June 30, representing a 72% year-on-year increase.
Revenue rose 51% to 234.56 billion rupees, supported by higher zinc, copper and silver prices.
The company’s zinc and lead business recorded revenue growth of nearly 50%, while copper revenue increased by 34%.
Silver revenue more than doubled during the quarter, contributing to the overall improvement in earnings.
Vedanta’s net profit margin also expanded to 22%, compared with 12% in the same quarter a year earlier, despite a 37% increase in raw material costs.
The company’s strong performance reflects both improved operating results and a favourable pricing environment for base metals.
Misra brings extensive experience across the mining and metals sector. He has led Hindustan Zinc and overseen the growth of Vedanta Zinc International, which operates mines and a concentrator in South Africa.
He joined Hindustan Zinc as deputy CEO in 2019 and became CEO and whole-time director in August 2020. He has also served as chairperson of the International Zinc Association.
The leadership transition comes after Vedanta recently completed a major restructuring of its businesses, with the group continuing to focus on strengthening its individual metals and mining operations.
The company’s strong quarterly performance provides a positive backdrop for Misra as he assumes the CEO role, particularly amid elevated prices for zinc, copper and silver.
Vedanta’s shares rose about 1.1% following the results, reflecting investor response to the stronger earnings performance.
The company’s results underline the importance of favourable commodity prices to its earnings outlook, while the appointment of Misra places an experienced mining executive at the helm as Vedanta continues to expand and optimise its metals portfolio.
